On June 14, 2022, Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (TIB, CAS) hosted the “CCIB Workshop on Bioenergy: A Road to Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality” via online and offline, co-chaired by Prof. SUN Jibin, Deputy Director-General of TIB and Founding Director of COMSATS Joint Center for Industrial Biotechnology (CCIB), and Prof. LI Demao, CCIB Coordinator of Joint R&D Group on Bioenergy. Prof. Ashraf Shaalan, Chairperson of COMSATS Coordinating Council and former President of National Research Centre (NRC) of Egypt, delivered an opening speech on behalf of COMSATS. Over 100 scientists and scholars from COMSATS member states such as China, Pakistan, Türkiye and Iran attended the workshop.
The workshop is targeted at the major needs of technological and industrial innovation on bioenergy, presentations and discussion are conducted around several topics including bio-hydrogen, cellulosic ethanol, syngas-to-ethanol, biogas and its chemicals.
Prof. Michael C. Jewett, Director from the Center for Synthetic Biology of Northwestern University of the United States, introduced in his keynote presentation entitled “Bioengineering Beyond Cells to Enable a Fair and Sustainable 21st Bio-century” that they have achieved efficient synthesis of acetone and isopropanol through clostridium autoethanogenum modification, metabolic flux optimization with omics analysis and kinetic modeling. Prof. REN Nanqi from Harbin Institute of Technology and the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, introduced the latest research progress of his team in hydrogen production and industrial demonstration in his keynote presentation entitled “Perspective of Fermentative H2 Production Technology from Biomass for Commercialization” and prospected the great commercial potential of hydrogen production by biomass fermentation. Besides, Prof. Habib Bokhari from Vice Chancellor of Kohsar University Murree of Pakistan, Prof. Azize Ayol from Department of Environmental Engineering at Dokuz Eylul University of Türkiye, Prof. Mehrdad Azin from Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology, Mr. SU Churan Environmental Engineer from Beijing Shougang LanzaTech New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and Prof. TIAN Chaoguang from TIB, CAS, introduced their latest research progress in utilization of solid waste resource, syngas-to-ethanol and integrated bio-refinery, respectively. After the presentation, the participants made in-depth discussions on promoting S&T cooperation and exchanges on bioenergy in the framework of CCIB.
