Juergen Wiegel was invited to visit Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (TIB) on May 23th. Juergen Wiegel was a professor of microbiology in the University of Georgia. He also served as editor of many famous journals. His research focus on two major fields: (1) The diversity of anaerobic thermophilic bacteria; and (2) the microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic bacteria. Professor Wiegel is an old friend of TIB. This is his second visit to Tianjin. He brought a wonderful presentation for scientists and students of TIB.
“Everything is everywhere: but, the environment selects” (Lourens Baas Becking, 1934). Professor Wiegel quoted the famous theory as the beginning of his presentation. The report entitled “Biogeography and Biogeochemisity of Thermoanaerobacter uzonensis (T. uzonensis) ---- an anaerobic thermophilic bacterium from Kamchatka”. In his presentation, Professor Wiegel had shown the studies of T. uzonensis isolates which isolated from different hot springs, and assessed the bacterial diversity at the intraspecies level. Based on the physiological, phylogenetic and genotypic data, fifty one different sequence types were observed within the 123 T. uzonensis isolates. Finally, he had summarized that the intraspecies diversity of T. uzonensis was associated with geographical distribution and environmental parameters, such as Temperature, Salinity, pH, Al, and H2S.
After the report, the participants had a lively discussion about the T. uzonensis.
