International Joint Center

TIB-VIB Joint Center of Synthetic Biology

Time:2024-12-22

The TIB-VIB Joint Center of Synthetic Biology is a flagship international partnership between TIB and Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie-Flanders Institute of Biotechnology(VIB).

Established in December 2020, the Joint Center was created to advance collaborative research in shared interests including yeast synthetic biology and biotechnology, and the biosynthesis of plant natural products. In December 2025, the partnership entered a new phase with the renewal of the cooperation agreement and the appointment of new leadership:

  • Prof. TIAN Chaoguang (Deputy Director-General of TIB) and Prof. Kevin Verstrepen (Director of the VIB Center for Microbiology) as Co-Directors
  • Prof. DAI Zongjie (TIB) as Deputy Director and Coordinator

The collaboration has since expanded into several forward-looking research themes:

  • Chassis cell metabolic mechanisms and regulatory networks
  • Pathway design and dynamic regulation
  • Microbial protein and natural product biosynthesis
  • Valorization of low-carbon compounds

Through these efforts, the Joint Center aims to foster comprehensive, in-depth cooperation and serve as a high-level platform for Sino-Belgian exchange and innovation in synthetic biology.
