The Chief Technology Officer Erik Kakes of Applikon Biotechnology, Inc. visited Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, CAS at the invitation of Professor Jibin Sun, the vice-director of TIB, on January 22th. Erik Kakes graduated in 1984 from van’t Hoff Institute in Rotterdam with specialization in Biochemistry. From 1984 until 1988 he worked for a sugar producing company, Cosun, optimizing Xanthan gum production. In 1988 he joined Applikon Biotechnology as a project manager. Via the R&D department he moved into Sales to become International Sales & Marketing Director. In 2008 he acquired the ownership of Applikon Biotechnology with Arthur Oudshoorn and Jaap Oostra through a management buyout. He made a presentation entitled "Scale up of bioreactor systems & Industry trends" In the lecture, Professor Erik Kakes detailing the basic amplification principles of bioreactor especially stirred reactor, and to analyze the key factors which impact stirred reactor amplification one by one, such as Geometrical characteristics, oxygen transfer coefficient KLa, maximum shear force dissolved oxygen, etc. In addition, Erik Kakes Professor described the development and application trends of stirred reactor in the fermentation industry from a technical and application level.
After the lecture, Professor Erik Kakes visited the Key Laboratory of Systems Microbial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences （KLSMB, CAS）accompanied by Professor Jibin Sun.
